Wow, this is so much improved from my first copy. It's really strange to me that such a highly anticipated and popular release wasn't pressed better right from the start.
As a massive enthusiast of early U2's work, I've been gradually completing my vinyl collection, and this album is part of that journey. I won't delve too much into the individual tracks here, as you can find that information elsewhere. Generally, this album and "War" are quite dense with that signature early '80s reverb sound, which is even more pronounced than Edge's usual delay effects. Consequently, the mix can come across as a bit chaotic and sometimes lacks clarity, especially in the vocals. Once you get used to the sound, though, you can kick back and enjoy the powerful bass lines, rhythmic guitar swells, and Bono's distinctive vocal range. He can go from a soft whisper to an intense scream in an instant—it's quite something. I did notice that the bass on "Bad" is noticeably louder than on the other tracks. The quality of this pressing is solid. No major issues here.
The tunes are fantastic, no doubt about it. However, as many have pointed out, there seems to be an issue with the production. Whether it's the recording, mastering, or pressing, I can't say. But it does sound cheap, weak, and like someone inexperienced made it.
I haven't got any other version of this to compare it with, but sadly, it just doesn't sound right. Side 1 is really muffled…Side 2 is a bit improved, however. The music's fantastic, naturally, but go for a different pressing!
Must've gotten a bad one, the other reviewer. This one sounds great! Not an audiophile, but it's good. It's dynamic, with solid bass and treble that's not too bright. Vocals come through clear. You can't beat this for the price.
