Though the tunes are perfect, the vinyl's got way too much hiss. Sound quality let me down big time. At least it's a looker...
It's a shame this album's mix is so poor. It's really missing dynamics. Comes across as flat and squashed.
This pressing is a significant improvement over the initial one. The sound is richer, and crucially, there's no crazy inner groove distortion like my messed up first pressing had. It's still not an amazing pressing, but it's much better. Now I can finally enjoy this fantastic album on vinyl.
If you're into having a visually appealing record for your collection or you're a Vola fan, go ahead and buy this. But if you're looking for a enjoyable listening experience, steer clear. This album is fantastic, but it's completely ruined by some of the poorest sounding vinyl I've ever had the misfortune of hearing, even when compared to other colored and picture discs. The sound is muddled, with a messy mix, boxy mids, bloated bass, and buried treble, resulting in a truly disappointing listen. A prime example is the grand, orchestral keys in the chorus of "These Black Claws" getting completely drowned out by a sea of murky, indistinct lows. The vinyl also has so many flaws straight out of the package that it makes the listening experience even worse. For instance, my side B came with an audible crackle, likely due to poor production quality, that can be heard on every spin over the music. Another copy might be better, but I'm not willing to spend more to find out. Stay away from this for anything other than collecting and displaying.
Terrible sounding, loud record. I can't even bear to listen to this album, which is a real shame because it's my top pick of 2021. They desperately need to re-release/repress this.
