Minimal surface noise and impressively clean right out of the box. While some might find the sound a tad muddy, it's not enough to phase me. The only downside was the distorted highs during the intro of 'Sail to the Moon,' which, to be fair, also sound a bit harsh on the digital version. No harshness on the vocals, though. 'There There,' fortunately my favorite track, sounded fantastic. Definitely worth picking up.
To my surprise, the sound quality is quite impressive for an XL release. I've been disappointed with every record I've purchased from this label in the past (Radiohead, Badbadnotgood, Gil Scott-Heron)...but this one actually turns out to be quite alright.
Alright, let's start with the positives: The audio quality is truly outstanding, they've managed to pull a ton of detail from these old soundboard recordings. I agree with the previous reviewer, turning up the volume is definitely worth it. My copy is a clean press, barely any surface noise and perfectly flat. Great pressing overall. Now, the not-so-good stuff: I'm really let down that this costs the same as a double-LP in a gatefold sleeve ($40USD), but it's just a single-LP in a flimsy cardboard sleeve. They had to leave out "Backdrifts" and "Punchup At A Wedding" to fit the rest of the album on one LP, so it obviously should've been a double-LP from the start. As it stands, the price should've been more like $20-30.
This pressing is so quiet, it's crazy! The sound quality is fantastic as well. I've listened to some live albums with terrible dynamics, but this one's not like that at all. It's absolutely incredible. I'd definitely recommend it.
Unbelievable. Simply unbelievable. Just like everyone else has mentioned. I'm so happy I chose to grab it the moment that WASTE email first popped up in my inbox way back in August. The crowd's handclaps during WSYB...and Thom going solo on I Will...it's just mind-blowing, that's all I've got to say.
