This is my first time listening to an original vinyl, but this remastered version is incredibly warm and musical, with a full range of sound. I owned the original CD and remember it having a sharper high end and drum sound, but the warmth of this vinyl makes me think the CD might have been mastered too aggressively. I'm curious which version is more true to the original studio recording? I'm hoping it's the vinyl! :)
Excellent audio quality, nice flat pressing, though it's a bummer that there's some surface noise that pops up every now and then. It doesn't completely wreck the listening experience, but it's a tad disheartening. That said, it still sounds fantastic and full, despite the surface noise.
This re-issue is pretty darn good, the few I've got. There's a couple of little pops here and there, but it's nothing that takes away from R.E.M.'s amazing tunes. It's got a great, rich, warm sound to it. I've got no complaints about this one.
If you manage to snag a copy in Near Mint or Very Good Plus shape, you're in for a treat with this one. After giving it a good clean with both an ultrasonic and suction record cleaner, the vinyl played perfectly, not a single pop or click to be heard. The soundstage is absolutely stunning, with crisp highs and mids that are clearly defined. The bass and lows are powerful and deep, with no muddiness at all. This is an amazing record pressing. I used to own this album on CD and cassette when I was a teen, right when it dropped. I've probably played it a million times. Hearing it on vinyl for the first time is incredible - there's so much detail, separation, and previously unnoticed instrumental bits. Little differences in the drummer's touch on the ride cymbal, the organ tones, the layers of vocal harmonies. It's just fantastic.
