It seems like the QC team at the plant handling these color presses might've been on break, 'cause every color reissue I've gotten, like this one, has been super warped or had some kinda flaw.
Seriously overlooked gem in REM's discography. 2001 wasn't a great year for vinyl production, so not many copies made. This holy grail copy sounds fantastic!
Incredible mastering, this album sounds phenomenal. A vast improvement over the squashed CDs from back in the day. Just pay attention to the cymbals crashing, the crystal-clear vocals, the punchy guitar solos, or the silky smooth strings... fantastic work! The GZ pressing quality on this release is way better than it used to be. Still not flawless, some crackles and pops even after cleaning, particularly between songs, but it's quite tolerable. However, the packaging is absolute garbage: poor printing quality, flimsy paper, and insert. Looks and feels like a record from the $1 bargain bin. Sound: 9/10 Pressing quality: 7/10 Packaging: 4/10
I've come across numerous opinions stating the US reissue wasn't up to par. However, this EU version is as quiet as a whisper. After giving it a good clean, I couldn't detect even the slightest crackle or pop. I do wish they'd released this on double vinyl, as you do need to turn up the volume a notch. Regarding the cut/mastering, I'd say the original pressing has a bit more life to it - not that this one is bad, it's just a touch more "neutral" (I think it's just a matter of personal preference). I'd say this is the reissue to go for. GZ Media really knocked it out of the park.
