The sound is crisp and full of life, with an expansive soundstage. It's as if Don Cherry is playing from one speaker and Pharoah Sanders from the other. Personally, I find that stereo effect a bit much. I understand this music is quite complex, but I'm utterly captivated by it. My copy has quite a few soft ticks on Side 1, not enough to spoil the experience, but it would be better if they were less noticeable.
Spotless, crisp, and level. Sounds incredible. Kudos to Gray, Optimal and Blue Note.
Incredible tracks from the top of the industry. Strong, disciplined but unrestrained. If you're a fan of Ornette Coleman, you'll love this. The sound quality here, and honestly on most Blue Note records, is unmatched. And let's not forget f'ing Pharoah Sanders!!? Grab it.
This is the Kevin Gray vinyl remastering on a Japanese CD. I'm going off my recollection, but this sounds significantly better than the late seventies vinyl version I used to own. You can actually make out Henry Grimes' playing on this...definitely a skronk-filled session, leaning more towards Ornette than Cherry's "Complete Communion" and "Symphony for Improvisers"...shorter tracks...Blackwell and Grimes are fantastic, and Cherry and Sanders seem to be blending into one massive sound together. Probably best to grab this on the recent vinyl reissue since I never replaced my old vinyl, thinking it wasn't that impressive of a session... this remastering is a real improvement. Not sure if UHQCD is more than just a marketing buzzword, but this CD sounds fantastic. The liner notes are in Japanese, of course, with quotes from Don Was and Kevin Gray in English.
Perfect copy. No hiss, no bend, no skips, just great.
