Without a doubt, this is one of the top releases of the year and a fantastic way to drive your neighbors crazy and give your record player a workout.
This album is absolutely one of the top I've listened to this year. It's a wild ride, sneaky then intense, soft then in your face. It just keeps getting more amazing with each playthrough. I'm completely hooked.
This is one of those albums in my collection that leaves me struggling to find the right words. In the UNI series, Alva Noto really captures that mechanical, energetic sound that I love from another favorite artist of mine, Nine Inch Nails. The beats are syncopated, relentless, like Skynet slowly figuring us out. I just wish the series didn't stop at a trilogy because this is, hands down, my favorite work by Alva Noto.
Listening to this once more today (and with the recent sad loss of Mika Vainio) really highlights how much it resembles a 'separated at birth / missing' Pan Sonic, Mika Vainio, Ø record. Maybe a bit gentler on the 'frequency extremist' aspects and not quite reaching the abyssal darkness of your 'incredibly skilled' hi-fi like Pan at their peak, but perhaps with more of a punch in the syncopation and structure binding the album together as a cohesive auditory experience.
