This is an amazing re-release that has everything you'd want in a special anniversary edition. The remastering truly enhances the moments that were lost in the original mix (the strings on 'Why Does It Always Rain On Me?' are a great example) and with the hidden track included at the end, nothing is left out. The second disc is equally impressive, featuring 90% of the b-sides along with the tracks from the standalone single 'Coming Around'. The only noticeable omission is the remix of "Writing To Reach You", but it can be easily found on the 'Driftwood' single. It's reasonably priced, beautifully compiled, and serves as a wonderful tribute to this era of the band. Not overly flashy or extravagant, the booklet includes a detailed account of the album's creation by Fran, full lyrics to each track, and a collection of stunning photographs from the recording sessions. Many bands planning anniversary sets could take a page out of this one.
The band's website is now offering reissues in two formats - a standard LP version (no 12" extra) and a box set...The sound quality on this reissue is an incredible triumph for a reissue. It's miles ahead of the CD. Easily on par with the original, no doubt. Completely silent vinyl, so go ahead and buy with confidence.
This anniversary edition is absolutely brilliant, packing in everything you'd hope for in a special release. The remastering truly enhances the album, revealing details that were buried in the original mix – like the strings on 'Why Does It Always Rain On Me?' – it's a prime example. Plus, the hidden track at the end ensures nothing is left out. The second disc is equally impressive, featuring 90% of the b-sides and all the tracks from the standalone single 'Coming Around'. The only thing missing is the remix of "Writing To Reach You", but you can easily find that on the 'Driftwood' single. It's a steal, put together with care and serves as a wonderful tribute to this era of the band. No over-the-top frills, the booklet includes a detailed account of the album's creation by Fran, lyrics to every track, and a collection of stunning photos from the recording sessions. Other bands planning anniversary sets should take notes from this one.
This is a peculiar pressing. It appears flawless, with no noticeable marks or scratches on my copy, yet disc 2, particularly with the bonus tracks, plays with continual clicks & pops. Thankfully the CD versions play just fine so you can at least enjoy the music through that medium.
Musically, this album is absolutely brilliant and deserves a perfect score. However, this specific copy had some pressing marks that affected the sound and some weird white 'talc' like substance. Quality control issue, maybe? It sounds a bit flat and hollow. It's no better than the CD, which, as a digital format, is understandable. The midrange and vocals are overly prominent, causing a bit of bass bloom, and it lacks that gorgeous analogue warmth and richness. There are a few minor clicks, particularly at the start of Side 2, Track 2. All in all, it's pretty decent but probably not worth the high price unless you're a huge fan. My original CD is just as good as this deluxe set.
