Look here, youngsters. This is exactly why we all went for CDs back in the 90s. Vinyl records were just awful, particularly when it came to hip hop albums.
Following his impressive first album, 2Pac dropped his sophomore release, Strictly For My N.I.G.G.A.Z. Now, it might not be my top pick from his discography, but I can't argue that it's not a pretty good album with some solid tracks. Sure, the themes here aren't too different from his debut, but the style? That's where you'll find a change. Across the board, 2Pac's second album is turned up a notch. The emotions in the songs? A bit more intense. When he's mad, he's madder; when he's smooth, he's smoother. The production is tighter, and 2Pac himself sounds more self-assured. Objectively speaking, this is just a strong output from an artist who met the hype. Funny thing is, as I'm writing this, I can't even remember why I didn't rate this release higher. Maybe I'll spend the afternoon revisiting it, giving it a fresh first listen. It wouldn't be the first time an album grew on me over time. As they say, quality is a matter of taste.
Here's where 2Pac truly shines after the mostly lackluster 2Pacalypse. There's just a couple of weaker songs on S4MN, and it kicks off a 3 (or 5 if you throw in Thug Life and Makaveli 7 Day Theory) album streak where he just keeps getting better and better. This pressing actually does the music justice. The packaging is as cheap and flimsy as it gets, showing minimal effort, but at least they used poly lined inners and amazingly - for GZ Media - BOTH discs are flat, clean and quiet! The mastering seems decent, but it's always been hit or miss with S4MN as the production is quite varied (too many cooks in the kitchen!) and the track qualities differ a lot because of this. All in all, I'm really happy to have a copy with quality vinyl to enjoy. Knocked off one star as a gatefold in better quality wouldn't be too much to ask for. Show the artist some respect, for crying out loud!!
This version doesn't have the problems that the EU release had, like audio only coming from the left channel when you begin side A. This album is absolutely fantastic. The sound quality is top-notch, and with a good pair of headphones, it's an incredible listening experience. Even on big speakers, it's impressive, especially considering it was made between 1992 and 1993. There's some crackling and popping, but it's not that bad and doesn't mess up the enjoyment.
Awesome album but it's pretty soft. Just crank up the volume. Still rad to own an original.
