Whether a review is positive, negative, or neutral, we always publish it. However, we screen every review to ensure it is authentic and free of profanity. These checks happen automatically, though a human occasionally steps in. We never pay for reviews.
From the start, two aspects caught me off guard: this relaxed, liberated album was captured live, and the CD reissue, featuring Stanley Turrentine, Bob Cranshaw, and Otis Finch, includes four bonus tracks that never made it to the original vinyl. You might expect "Queen Of The Organ" to be all about Shirley Scott and her organ, but it's so much more—it's a subtle dance of sounds and rhythms that'll keep you coming back for more. Born in 1934, Shirley was also quite skilled on the trumpet and piano before finding her groove on the then-new Hammond B3 organ, though she had a unique way of making it sound like a Wurlitzer, inspiring the likes of Al Kooper and Mike Bloomfield. Shirley wasn't your typical swinging New York City cat; she was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and spent her whole life there. That's why folks like me took her for granted, thinking she and her husband Stanley Turrentine would always be around. But her passing in 2002 at the age of 67 hit me hard. If I had to sum up her sound in two words, it'd be "Hip Soul"—music that simmers but never boils over, and that's exactly what you'll find here. She played with the grace of high art and a refined sense of taste, smart, cool, and sophisticated, completely structured yet loose, giving the other players room to weave in and out around her, always respectful of her direction. **The Fun Facts:** While drugs like cocaine and heroin were rampant in the jazz scene, Shirley's vice was diet pills, the first methamphetamines, legally prescribed in capsule and liquid form, mainly for weight-loss. Hammond, the makers of the iconic Hammond organ, actually started out crafting some of the finest electric alarm clocks around… I should know, I've got a 70-year-old chrome beauty sitting by my bed. Review by Jenell Kesler
Man, this album is a total banger, especially in mono. The musicians here truly shine and back up Scott's performance perfectly.
This album is an absolute stunner, especially when you listen to it in mono. The musicians really stand out and do an amazing job backing up Scott's performance.
Unclear what sets this apart from the other mono review, but here's another one. Scott truly outdid himself with this one. The cast is incredibly supportive of her.
Unclear on what sets this apart from the other mono review, but here's my take: This is among Scott's finest works. The cast is phenomenal, providing fantastic support for her.
