With his new ensemble, Charles Mingus crafted a stunning, deeply moving, and captivating album. It begins with the magnificent Canon, where George Adams and Ronnie Hampton play some incredibly evocative phrases, before the drums and bass launch into a track that could fit seamlessly into a lost session of time-traveling Sketches of Spain. Opus 4 gets seriously groovy. Moves is a lovely vocal piece, drifting delicately. Hard to believe that drummer Dannie Richmond had just returned from some rock adventures, coaxing such tender sounds from his kit. Wee follows with outstanding solos from all, especially Don Pullen on piano. The tempo ebbs and flows on this contemplative track. George Adams introduces the beautiful Flowers for a Lady, another standout on this flawless album, filled with nothing but gems. In my view, a true masterpiece of exquisite beauty, possessing an enduring charm. Both relaxed and powerful at the same time. The quintet delivers an outstanding performance on these seven recent compositions. Great opportunity to snag an original copy of this highly recommended Mingus treasure.
