Here's one of those 1960s rock records that hints at what the genre would evolve into during the 1970s. A fantastic first album from Cream, marking the beginning of the "power trio". Maybe not as innovative as some other British rock music from 1966, but Cream's knack for taking American blues and cranking up the volume was their specialty. They also managed to stretch out into solid classic rock territory with songs like Sleepy Time Time and Dreaming. "Toad" showcased Ginger Baker bringing the jazz drummer's tradition of the drum solo into the rock scene. Some parts might feel a bit scattered, but overall "Fresh Cream" delivered some crucial tracks. This early 1980s(?) re-release doesn't boast the best audio quality and sports one of the worst re-issue covers for such a pivotal album. It's alright, but there are definitely better re-masters out there that also include the two bonus tracks featured here.
The UK mono version on A2/B1 sounds absolutely incredible. It's got a crazy amount of bass compared to the small stereo mix. This album is just like Sgt. Pepper, where the mono mix is a must.
Is it worth making another version of this album just because of the vinyl's color? Mine is black, but it's identical otherwise.
How does this Version stack up against the other Japanese Editions or initial Pressings?
This one's got that dreadful original 'stereo' mix. Steer clear!
