As others have mentioned, it's pricey, but it's absolutely worth every penny. Hands down, this is the best sounding record I own.
In my opinion, this album marks a significant shift in Elliott's discography. The overall vibe takes a complete turn starting here: the sadness and darkness fade away, replaced by a sense of liberation and joy. It's like a refreshing breeze after being cooped up in a stale room. The tracks that stand out to me the most are: "Son Of Sam", "Somebody That I Used To Know", "L. A.", "Wouldn't Mama Be Proud", and "Can't Make A Sound". Giving this album a listen is highly suggested. :)
I gotta admit, I'm not picking up what's being said up there. I don't see ES as being about flawless production, but more like that cassette tape, photocopy vibe, similar to the artwork on the cover. Maybe I'm hearing it differently, in a kinda alt-folk, gritty way. I'm also listening to either/or and a similar soundstage is created. It's kinda hazy, flat, simple, not polished. There's def some groove drag. Anyways, this whole thing has an overall humid, lonely, dusty, and grunge feel. Like a greasy face with a flip of dirty bangs and an old sweater with some moth holes. Not perfect, but perfect.
Elliott Smith, you've made music feel real, you're the best thing ever, thanks!
This album is absolutely one of my all-time favorites, but this particular pressing is absolute trash! The last few sides are so messed up, they're just not listenable! I'm really let down by this.
