While 'Empty Sky' might not be packed with the catchy pop tunes we associate with Elton John, it more than compensates with its atmospheric and melodic, even trippy, sounds that define 1969. (FYI: ‘Empty Sky’ got a re-release in 1975.) No matter which version you're grooving to, this record is intense. ‘Empty Sky’ is a mix of Dylan, Stones, Floyd, Velvet Underground, Jethro Tull, and pure passion. It feels like a tribute to his peers and a heads-up that Elton John is set to conquer the globe.
Don't pay attention to the negative reviews about this album, as it's a fantastic listen throughout, matching the brilliance of Honky Chateau and Yellow Brick Road. The claim that there are "no forgotten gems" is just not true, with powerful tracks like the title song, Western Ford Gateway, and Sails, as well as beautiful ballads like Lady What's Tomorrow, Hymn 2000, and an early take on Skyline Pigeon. Elton's voice is a bit more subdued here, lacking the extensive range he'd later showcase on Madman Across The Water, but it's still superb. The original UK pressing of this album sounds amazing and is surprisingly easy to find for a bargain. Highly recommended.
His vocals and sound are amazing, this album is one of his finest. It's so raw and has a vibe that's truly unique. I'm loving it!
This LP sounds incredible, super intimate, with Elton 'right there' in the middle of the soundstage. It's holographic as anything, with amazing clarity too.
This album is among his finest work, it's so unfiltered and evokes a unique emotion that's rare to find. I'm absolutely in love with his vocals and the overall sound.
