I can't really say much more than what's already been said in the other glowing reviews, this is a fantastic "hard bop" jazz record that maintains a consistent, upbeat tempo on both sides (for the most part). The highs, mids, and lows are all spot on and flow seamlessly, though there's some distortion on a few of Byrd's solos, but only when he hits those super high notes. The vinyl itself is perfectly flat with no rough edges or surface noise, and the center hole is perfectly cut so there's no wobble with my tonearm. Highly recommended for all you "jazz heads" out there who love hard bop and the like. Music 5*, Sound quality 5*, Mastering 5*. Vinyl front-end: Rega P3:RB880 tonearm, Cartridge: Denon DL103r, Phono Stage: Whest Audio TWO.2
What took so long for this to come out, 18 years after it was taped? Byrd and Adams shine, Herbie Hancock is out of this world, top-notch Hard Bop all the way through!
After hearing the Byrd in Flight version, I grabbed this one - and it was just as amazing. The sound quality is flawless and it's a fantastic listen.
INCREDIBLE! This album is fantastic! I've been holding out forever for a repress, finally got it at musicdirect. Didn’t wanna pay those crazy flipper prices. Absolutely worth the wait! Great dynamics, fast-paced and powerful bass, excellent instrument separation!
Choosing a favorite recording is tough, just can't do it. But this one's absolutely in my top 100, maybe even top three by Byrd! Pepper Adams sounds fantastic here. I reckon Blue Note's budget might've stopped some music from coming out, not any lack of talent on this track.
