A definitive example of Hard Bop. A true jazz masterpiece that belongs in every dedicated jazz enthusiast's collection.
Upon its initial release, I purchased this reissue, played it a single time, and promptly added it to my collection of "hard bop" albums from that era. Last November, I was packing away a bunch of stuff I never listen to and thought about including this one too, but something told me to keep it out. Yesterday, out of the blue, I got the urge to pull it out and give it another listen. Wow! This one has taken its sweet time to win me over, but I'm absolutely smitten with it now! I guess I'll have to hunt down the other Donald Byrd and Doug Watkins Transition records that Blue Note has given the Tone Poet treatment to!
This album is fantastic! The packaging looks simple on the outside, but it's packed with goodies inside β a double-sided insert featuring liner notes and a replica of the original black-and-white booklet. I was really into the booklet (written by Tom Wilson). The modern notes are both captivating and educational! The sound quality is excellent, at least on my copy (after a wet cleaning before playing). The lineup is just stellar, tackling a pretty varied set of tracks. Easily one of my top Tone Poet releases.
Once again, this series has outdone itself. They've truly done it this time. The sound is so rich and distinct, it feels like the performers are right here in the room with me. Absolutely incredible.
Thrilled about the Transition series and this one is fantastic. Received a pristine flat copy, it sounds amazing, they even got the generic blue back cover right like the original, can't wait for Doug Watkins next month!
