I'm not on the same page regarding the audio quality. I'm spinning my record as we speak, and it's absolutely fantastic. The vinyl is super quiet, with an amazing soundstage and clear instrument separation. It's a real joy to listen to.
I was really expecting this reissue to capture the essence of this iconic 70s album. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite hit the mark. The sound is strangely EQ’d, with a dull presentation that's heavily biased towards the bass. You can barely make out Maury Muehleisen’s fantastic acoustic licks on a few tracks. It's not much of an upgrade from my budget Lifesong repressing. There's also some surface noise to contend with. It's basically CD-quality with an amped-up bass.
I have this release, but the cover notes say B5 Photographs And Memories. The label states B5 A Long Time Ago.
Snagged this one for a few bucks from a local record shop. Gave it a good clean in my ultrasonic machine and it sounds fantastic. Barely any hiss on the quiet songs, just a tad of noise between tracks. Super happy with this pressing!
I've got a practically flawless copy of this album, and the vinyl is incredibly quiet - it's a top-notch pressing. There's absolutely no tape hiss. If I had to nitpick, I'd say the overall sound quality is fantastic, but just a tiny bit of effort seems to have been put into softening the high ends - I can't say if that's how the album usually sounds. Still, I'm more than happy with this record. Out of all the Croce albums I've listened to, this one sounds the best. The instrument separation is amazing. Jim's voice is perfectly centered and clear. When his guitar comes out of the left speaker, it feels like he's right there in the room with you. The drums come from the right channel and they're also well-defined. On some tracks, Jim's voice has a peculiar resonance, probably due to his vocal frequency interacting with the mic in an unusual way. It's a bit odd, but it's likely just how his voice interacts with recording equipment. All in all, this is excellent.
