Fantastic record quality. This album is still top-notch and holds up well over time.
While browsing a knick-knack shop in North Wales last December, I stumbled upon a copy of this for just £5. It was in rough shape, covered in mildew and looking like it had seen better days. But I thought, why not give it a shot? After a few cycles through the Spin Cleaner, it sounded incredible. Honestly, it's far superior to any other copy I've owned or listened to. There's just something about the bass warmth, the instrument clarity, and the guitar on the left speaker towards the end of "Five Years"... it's truly amazing.
Honestly, the music quality here is fantastic. I matched it up with a rip from the sound and svision series au20 remaster, and this one just blows it away in terms of detail. I'm really into the 2024 remix, even though I haven't listened to it all that much. So, why the middle-of-the-road review? Well, the packaging is super basic, just thin cardboard that's already got dents and dirt from a bit of handling. There's no extras and just a very simple booklet, which makes it feel a bit overpriced to me.
In my opinion, the most fitting word to characterize this rendition is "serene." It's akin to an upscale dinner gathering interpretation of a Classic Rock record. Turning up the volume significantly enhances the experience. I'd even suggest that, on my setup, a proper balance wasn't achieved until I gave it a substantial volume increase. The positive aspect of this is that it didn't cause listener fatigue or sound washed out when I did so. I've encountered this approach occasionally when streaming high-resolution audio. I suppose there's more than one way to cater to an audiophile? I'm certainly interested in obtaining a traditional copy to see what I might be missing from this album, though. By the way, I don't think an album has ever benefited more from my upgrade to a new turntable than this one has. (Upgraded from a Sony LS300 to a Fluance RT85, for what it's worth)
This is a genuine timeless piece, naturally. Including "Velvet Goldmine", a b-side track, is a classic. I'm not an audio expert, but I reckon the record's sound quality is fantastic.
