From 1970 to 1971, Jimmy McGriff dropped four of his finest albums. Out of these, BLACK PEARL (Blue Note) is a must-have live record, while SOUL SUGAR stands out as the top studio album of that era. Tracks like "Ain't It Funky Now", "Bug Out", "The Now Thing", "Fat Cakes", and "New Volume" are absolute gems, but honestly, there isn't a weak song here. It's some of the funkiest soul jazz you'll come across. The sound quality on this pressing is mostly fantastic, though it could use a bit more oomph in the bass. Apart from that, it's pretty solid. My copy plays like a dream, nice and clear, with just a hint of surface noise here and there. If you're into this, go check out BLACK PEARL, GROOVE GREASE, and ELECTRIC FUNK. Top-notch material.
