2 stars out of 5. That's the highest rating I can give for this one. My version has some skips and hisses.
In general, the sound quality is quite impressive. I'm picking up some noticeable inner groove distortion with my Fluance RT82, so perhaps higher-end styluses or turntables might manage it better. But trust me, this pressing is absolutely worth it for the incredible, powerful tracks like Achilles and Nobody alone.
This album nails exactly what you'd expect from Led Zep: powerful, gritty, yet each instrument is distinct and has its own place. The bass is rich and full, and the highs are smooth with no harshness. While it's a bit of an underrated album and "Achilles" is a tad too long, it still packs some of their finest tracks. Plus, it's quite a steal. I'm really satisfied. The rating is 4 stars only because the band has at least 4 or 5 albums that outshine this one (which is pretty amazing when you think about it). For nearly any other band, this would be a straightforward 5 stars for both sound and content.
I'm puzzled by the average ratings this album has received. The RS Alsdorf / Strawberry editions are absolutely fantastic. Perhaps it's just that this particular music isn't as beloved as other Zeppelin works. But at this point, you should already know if you're a fan, and if you are, you won't be let down by this version.
this album is my all-time fav - i play it non-stop
