I'm at a loss as to why the Columbia Record Club version of this album has each track fading out and in, with a couple of seconds of quiet between them. The whole point of this record is that the songs are supposed to blend seamlessly into one another, without that awkward pause. I can only guess that maybe it was also sent to radio stations to make it easier for DJs to cue up tracks. It's just odd, though.
It's packed with some awesome songs, but it's a bit too "symphonic" for my liking.
In my view, this is hands down the finest sounding iteration of the album. The vinyl is incredibly quiet, boasting stellar dynamics and minimal inner groove distortion. This pressing is either equal to or surpasses the UK version.
I snagged this one for a steal at a nearby store, where I'm certain it had been gathering dust for at least two years. I finally decided to grab it just to have a Nautilus Superdisc in my collection. I don't have any other version of this album to compare it to, and while it's not my top Moody Blues record (that'd be DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED), I've got limited space. It might be one of the better versions out there (though I'd need to get my hands on an original pressing and the MoFi to be sure), but I have to say, it didn't blow me away. It doesn't sound significantly better than what I've heard on streaming. It's not *awful*, but it didn't knock my socks off. I'll revisit this if I ever get the chance to collect a few more copies of OTTOAD.
Whether it's the fold-down mix or the original mono press, the first single packs a punch and this is the pinnacle of psych Moodies. I'd never quite grasped how trippy and visionary they were until now. Absolutely brilliant. 5*
