If you're looking for the usual ATCQ boom-bap sound, this might not be your cup of tea. However, house DJs should definitely check it out – both A side mixes are top-notch! The main mix, with its vocals, is a great addition to any house set. And Dub 1 is an awesome, uplifting piano house track, even if it's not your typical ATCQ vibe.
Arguably the most dispensable A Tribe Called Quest track, "Luck Of Lucien" was put out in this remixed form to push the oddball creation known as "Revised Quest For the Seasoned Traveler", a collection of remixes and different versions out for the non-U.S. audiences. The A side remixes aren't the worst, but they strip away the essence of "Lucien" and morph it into a somewhat faster/pitched-up hip house tune. Not terrible, but certainly easy to overlook. The B-side remixes, though, are genuinely bad. Cheesy and uncomfortable, they feel like a misguided effort to...well...to be honest, I'm not really sure what the goal was here. It's a kind of shiny, unpleasant, lifeless sound that brings to mind early 1990s fast food ads. The "Hip Hop Mix" only becomes bearable in its last twenty seconds or so. Why didn't they make the whole mix more like this final part? The "Vixen Dub" is downright offensive. Just a cheesy beat with chopped-up vocal snippets thrown over it like toppings on a pizza. Seems random, with little to no thought given to how it fits with the underlying beat. Basically, I have no need to listen to any of these four remixes again.
Upbeat clubby tunes. Pretty decent for a summer chill-out sesh with a cold one
