This marked the third time he teamed up with Art Taylor and Paul Chambers. "Groovy" might not be the perfect label, but the record is top-notch. Slightly more upbeat than earlier works, Garland shines and Chambers delivers an outstanding performance throughout.
This latest Craft OJC pressing of Groovy is an absolute triumph. The mono sound is impressively focused yet remarkably three-dimensional, with Red’s piano right at the center, Chambers’ bass rich and deep, and Taylor’s cymbals sparkling against a jet-black backdrop. My copy is perfectly flat, dead center, and eerily silent—no hisses, clicks, or surface noise to take away from the music. Matthew Lutthans’ mastering lets the recording flow naturally, adding real depth and warmth without sounding flat or too “retro.” If you're a fan of Prestige-era piano trio sessions, this is a no-brainer recommendation and a near-perfect copy of the album.
Here's another pressing, released in 1988 (1989.5.10), from South Korea that's out there
I'm right there with everyone else - this album is absolutely amazing. It's definitely one of my top picks for a bright, sunny day jazz record. And being a bass player, I've gotta say, PC's playing on this is just fantastic...
Awesome tracklist and fantastic album. This ojc pressing isn't quite audiophile quality, but it's got solid dynamics and a fair sound stage. It's a bit lacking in the high end though. For the price, it's a good deal and Garland can really lay down a groovy beat :)
