I ain't got no stereo to match it up with, but this mono RSD is truly awesome. The vinyl is dead quiet, and it sounds fantastic.
Amazing deal on this New Jazz purple label + Steve Lacy as the standout soloist = Must-have A+++ score!
Before getting this Record Store Day version, I hadn't given this album a spin, neither in mono nor stereo. Actually, the only Gil Evans stuff I'd heard was his work with Miles Davis (Miles Ahead & Sketches Of Spain). That aside, I found this pressing to sound pretty decent! It's well-balanced, detailed, and has a solid low end. Luckily, my copy is flat and not warped (that issue seems to pop up way too much lately). The music didn't quite match what I expected from a "Big Band" album, but I still really enjoyed it. If you're into this era of jazz or this album specifically, I'd recommend picking up this version. Even though it's only been 3 days since its release (as of when I'm writing this), copies are already going for around $22, even though it retails for $33. You'll likely get a good deal out of it.
I haven't got the AP stereo version of this record, so I can't do a direct comparison, but I do own a few AP Prestige releases... In comparison, this Craft pressing is just as excellent - the cover is pristine, smooth, and gorgeous. In terms of sound, it's dynamic yet provides natural instrument distinction and a multi-layered soundstage. I'm really happy with this fantastic album. THAT BEING SAID, my setup is fairly basic and doesn't include a mono cartridge, so bear that in mind when reading my review.
Chad and the AP crew have done it again with another amazing release! Outstanding!
