I was really looking forward to this album, then I came across those infamous "muddy" comments. So, I considered buying the Japanese pressing instead of the original US version, thinking it might have a brighter sound. But then, that didn't feel right to me. If I were to get it, I wanted the original mix/master/edition, as it was meant to sound. And so, I found it and bought it at my local store for 15€ (unbelievable). I get what they mean about the muddiness, but no doubt it still has a warm and vivid sound. I played it with my girlfriend in the room, who knew nothing about that supposed muddiness, and she remarked out loud how great this album sounds (which she usually doesn't do). I'd like to compare it with the Japanese pressing someday. I give it 3 stars instead of 4, maybe because I'm pre-influenced by that "muddy" talk. Maybe this was all a misunderstanding or rumor, for a very warm sound the record has, maybe a little too warm. No doubt it's a peculiar mix/master, but an interesting analog sound anyway, and given how good the record itself is, it deserves a place in any Stevie Wonder fan's collection.
Indeed, it's from 1980, I own it, and it's noted on the sleeve (featuring a stunning image of Dr. Martin Luther King), by the way, it sounds fantastic, just like many German records tend to.
The first pressing of this Kendun record is absolutely phenomenal! It boasts an incredibly deep bass, with fantastic highs and midrange. Even the gatefold sleeve on mine seems to be laminated, as it has a subtle shine all over. I wholeheartedly recommend these Kendun pressings.
I own this one and it's a joy to listen to. Highly recommend it.
Wow, this is a huge step up from the original USA first pressing! The sound is so much more alive and vibrant, it's like the music is breathing. If you're a fan of this album, you absolutely need this version. It's a shame this gem from Stevie Wonder's classic 70's era is so overlooked.
