I'm absolutely in love with the tracks on this album. The art direction and packaging are equally fantastic, they really outdid themselves. This album is truly one-of-a-kind. I must say, the Pitchfork review was way off the mark, it seemed like it just wasn't their cup of tea. If you're a Justice fan, you'll adore this. That said, I wish it had been pressed as a 45. For me, this music is all about bass, punch, and power. I felt like it was a bit toned down on this release, and I would've loved to see it mastered in a full-throttle 45rpm format. All that aside, I'm thrilled to own this album and think it sounds fantastic as it is. But it's not going to be as crisp and wild as the digital version (it's never going to be on vinyl, but I think in this case, spreading the tracks across 2x45s would have been cool...who knows, maybe they'll do that in the future!) Grab it, it's awesome.
Quite a sturdy solo endeavor. You can certainly detect the Justice inspiration, though maybe a tad more subdued. Feels almost like the score for a film or television series.
I'd give the music on this album 5 stars, I'm really loving his solo debut. A whole lot. But the mastering/mixing is only worth 4 or 3.5 stars. It's not terrible, but it's not fantastic either. The highs aren't super crisp and the mids sometimes blend into the lows. The pressing is alright, with a bit of surface noise here and there, but it's pretty minimal.
A really nice solo album that tells us more about Gaspard's preferences and his way of composing in the duo Justice. As for the vinyl, it's MPO, so the quality is impeccable, from the pressing to the sleeve. I've seen comments about the mastering, it's true that it's not as wide as Hyperdrama's, but it's still a good mastering, even if a bit light on volume in terms of mixing.
