THERE'S A GOLDEN STICKER ON THE BACK OF MY COPY THAT SAYS 'THE ERIC CLAPTON REMASTERS...'
For a Mid-Price reissue, the audio quality is surprisingly decent
After spotting some positive feedback on the Steve Hoffman forums (from actual buyers), I decided to purchase this box set. Had I owned the 2006 deluxe edition, I might not have spent the money on this one. Here's what I appreciate about it. The booklet is quite neat, packed with interesting information and images. Unfortunately, there are no photos from the original recording sessions (I think it's due to a copyright issue with Barry Feinstein's estate). In my view, the discs are well-mastered, with no signs of brickwalling or heavy compression. I checked different mixes in Audacity and viewed the CD files as WAVs. There's very little limiting on the CDs, leaving a good amount of dynamic range across all four discs. The box is sturdy and well-built. I won't lie, though, it would've been great to include the promo mono mix in this set. The mono tapes might have been lost in the Universal warehouse fire of 2008, so it's hard to say. Now, here's what I'm not so keen on. The CDs are placed in a cardboard die-cut sleeve, which I'm not a fan of as it can lead to scratches if the package is moved around. Luckily, my CDs are scratch-free and play just fine (though some suggest using rice paper CD sleeves). Next, the price. I paid around $55, which is mid-range. Amazon offers it for about $45, while other sellers go as high as $85, so shop around. All in all, it's a pretty cool collection and, in my opinion, a fantastic gift for any serious Clapton fan.
Fantastic sounding record. Perfectly balanced. Great thick cover. Ten ten ten
This album seems designed for a car sound system, it's got tons of bass but zero energy. The vinyl is pretty quiet and does come with a nice inner sleeve, but I'd suggest grabbing a vintage copy if you're considering this one. I only picked it up 'cause it was on sale for ten bucks. Full price? I'd be sending it right back.
