It's utterly incomprehensible how anyone could overlook this album as one of Joni Mitchell's finest works. The bass lines by Jaco Pastorius in "Overture...Cotton Avenue" are nothing short of astonishingly brilliant, both in performance and recording. This album marked her progression from "Court and Spark" through "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" to the sheer brilliance of "Hejira." As a musical piece, it's almost perfect. Joni never followed anyone else's path; she created for her own fulfillment, and listeners either connected or were left behind. It's my all-time favorite Joni Mitchell album. I was fortunate enough to attend her first concert of the 1979 tour at the Oklahoma City Zoo Amphitheater, where Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny, David Brecker, and Joni performed. We had third-row seats at this outdoor venue. It was scorching hot, and she was absolutely angelic! The set list can be found at https://jonimitchell.com/chronology/detail.cfm?id=1471.
Gosh, if you've seen my thoughts on Hejira, you'd get my recent vinyl hunting habits. All that's on hold now until this virus blows over, if it ever does! I picked this up for a mere £6 in Hull back in 2018, but only today did I find the time to see what edition I'd bought. Life's been hectic with family health issues, I'm afraid. Turns out I've got a first pressing variant 2, and it's in brilliant nick. The discs are almost mint, and both the inner and outer gatefold sleeves are near mint too. On my Rega P7, it sounds incredibly smooth and spacious, with fantastic bass and a wide soundstage. It's a fantastic-sounding album. I can't use the technical jargon, but having played vinyl since 1970, it sounds perfect to me. Though, at 58, I'm not sure my hearing's up to scratch anymore. Thank the heavens for Joni. Why didn't she get the recognition she deserved during the mid to late 70s? Sampling, world music, suspended sus. chords galore, progressive music, jazz collaborations—she was ahead of everyone else's game. Like Kate Bush who came after, a true trailblazer.
Incredible find! I stumbled upon a near mint, barely touched original pressing for just $6. What a steal!--Denon 103Marantz TT-15Parks Puffin phono
This record sounds fantastic, a real rediscovery of a brilliantly recorded album. Grab it at a bargain price while it's in near mint condition.
It's a bit tricky to determine if the occasional clicks, pops, and static are from the record's age or just a lower quality pressing. There's some noticeable sibilance on my copy too. Perhaps I should give it another thorough cleaning. Regardless, it's a fairly good pressing to enjoy that mighty album in its original format. But it's not flawless or crystal clear by any means!
