This is an outstanding session from one of the best in hard bop—captured in October 1957, featuring two incredible lineups: a quintet (with Art Farmer, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Charlie Persip) and a larger nonet including Gigi Gryce, Sahib Shihab, Jimmy Cleveland, and Julius Watkins. Tracks like “Whisper Not,” “Step Lightly,” and “Capri” showcase amazing arrangements, soulful saxophone solos, and thrilling group dynamics. These 1984 Original Jazz Classics mono pressings are famous for their clarity and sound quality. This copy sounds fantastic—warm, sharp, and full of life. It keeps the album's lively yet melodic feel, with a deep tenor sound, crisp horn lines, and a rhythm section that swings with precision. The mono sound gives it a tight, up-close feel—like the band is playing right in front of you. If you're looking for a clean, powerful version of this hard bop classic, this reissue is a top pick!
Based on the labels and the jacket's material, this appears to be an early reissue, likely from '58 since yellow labels were swapped out the next year. It's just as excellent as the original, but for a much lower cost.
