Whether a review is positive, negative, or neutral, we always publish it. However, we screen every review to ensure it is authentic and free of profanity. These checks happen automatically, though a human occasionally steps in. We never pay for reviews.
I haven't got another version to contrast this with, but I'm not entirely persuaded by it. It's not a recording that I feel warrants a double 45 premium priced reissue, and to emphasize the futility, sides 3 and 4 total just 13 minutes of music. Moreover, it doesn't sound as good as some other AP Atlantic 75ths, which are their definitive versions. This might be the best this has ever sounded, but that's not saying much. Additionally, QRP needs to refocus on the QUALITY aspect of their brand name. Non fills/stitchings have snuck into too many pressings. They seem unable to press flat records with centered labels now as well. Too many smell like an amateurish product churned out with no care for attention to detail... PLEASE don't turn into GZ Media lol! Fortunately, despite all these issues with my copy, it plays quietly enough to enjoy, so I don't need to return it. But these are premium pressings, and no one wants a bad taste. Apart from that, the packaging and presentation is flawless as usual for this series. I just wish this title had been left as a more modest and much cheaper 33rpm edition, thus giving another, better sounding and longer Atlantic title a chance at being definitive!
The highs are quite intense all the way through, almost like she was recorded with a "hot" mic, but it's not too much to handle.
I must say, I'm somewhat disappointed. The sound quality is decent, but I was expecting more from the original tapes. Tracks like "Say a little prayer" still have background noise and harsh highs, which is frustrating because VMP usually delivers crystal clear recordings. If you can find a mint condition version, you might want to go for that, unless you're into mono. On the bright side, it's not terrible. I compared it with a copy from Google play, and they sounded pretty much the same. Plus, the packaging is fantastic.
Sounds amazing, this press. Not a peep of noise and the mastering's not too shabby, even though it's just a mono record.
I have two of these. I'm always on edge when I'm playing. One is still sealed. I'm a cruel but fair person.
