I wasn't anticipating much from this one after the slight letdown with Kingdom Come. However, the video for American Gangster left a strong impression on me recently, so I revisited this CD with renewed confidence and it did not let me down at all.... His rap style and delivery are unmatched - you can tell Lay-Z is in his element, and the lyrics flow straight from his mind to the mic. His voice sits perfectly in the middle of the stereo mix. The fantastic production and excellent mastering are a bonus. The guests are well-chosen, as usual: Lil' Wayne, Nas, and his old friend Beanie Sigel are on the harder tracks. Kanye West and Pharrell appear on the more playful songs. Even his wife, BeyoncΓ©, makes a few nice appearances as a background singer. What makes this album so fantastic is the music! I've never heard a rap album with so much going on musically. The samples sound so familiar that you often think "HIT" even before the song is over. And the producers: Diddy and the Hit Makers LV & Sean C produced most of the tracks, and their work sounds incredible. You have a lot of real instruments, a drummer, and a guitar player; sometimes even a horn section, pianos, and more. To make this album even better, there are a handful of hardcore tracks by Just Blaze (on the Beanie Sigel collaboration), DJ Toomp, and others. The Neptunes and even Jermaine Dupri add their special flavor to the product (JD produced the Nas/Jay-Z track). This LP is easily twice as good as the rushed Kingdom Come, close to The Blueprint, and on the same level as The Black Album.
